Task-Based Learning (TBL)
Don't teach "Food Vocabulary." Teach "How to Order a Meal." TBL centers the lesson around a real-world goal. The language is just the tool to achieve that goal. If the student successfully orders the imaginary pizza, they passed, regardless of whether they used the perfect subjunctive tense.
Cultural Context
Language cannot be separated from culture. Modern ESL is about cultural exchange. It's about understanding idioms, humor, and social norms. It's about preparing students not just to pass a test, but to function and thrive in a globalized world.
